Tiny Living and Money Matters

Money Matters: Plan your retirement!

I look forward to our retirement. I’m not in a rush, of course, but I look forward to it because it’ll be just me and my husband once again. Once in a while we look back at the days when it was just the two of us and sigh at the memories.

Not that we don’t like having children, they are the best thing that ever happened to us and our constant reminder of God’s faithfulness to us and our family.

But I also know that they will grow up and lead their own lives someday, and we are doing everything that we can to help them have stable lives, including in the area of finances.

When that day comes, Jay and I don’t want to be a burden to them. We don’t want them to worry about our finances, we want them to focus on loving their wives, providing for their own families, leading them, raising their children and doing what God has called them to do.

Jay and I learned about managing our finances a little late. But just a few days ago, I came across a retirement plan for people in their mid-40’s and up and that gave me hope.

There is hope!

Which is why I think this webinar, Retire Rich: Financial Planning for Retirement Webinar (Re-run), is a good investment.

Too many times we dream about how we want our future to be, but seldom do we take steps towards those dreams.

As they say, some people dream it, others do it. Which one are you? I sure heck want to be one of the latter.

“A good man leaves an inheritance to his

What will you gain from the webinar?

It’s one thing to want to plan your retirement and another to know how to do it. Retire Rich: Financial Planning for Retirement webinar will cover the hows – how to plan for your retirement, how to build strong financial foundation, how to define proper retirement goals and how to create your investment portfolio for retirement.

This is basically for everyone, not just for couples like us who do not want to wear out our kids in the future. If you’re an Overseas Filipino Worker who want to be with your family sooner, this webinar will teach you how to be able to do that.

And if you’re a young professional, I’m telling you, young people, plan now while you’re young.

Because if you find yourself in the same boat as us — planning our retirement alongside raising a young family, it’s still possible but it’s a whole lot harder.

Too many times we dream about how we

I have always believed that a person needs a mentor when it comes to finances and this is where advisers come in. Just make sure you choose the ones who you will give your trust to. 🙂

    • May De Jesus-Palacpac

Yes, I think most financial planners are equipped to provide you with the basic mentorship you need.

While I know that I still have a lot of working years in my career, I am already working on my retirement because

    1) I don’t like to work forever. And, if I can retire earlier .. hurrah!
    2) I want to still be able to enjoy whatever’s left of my youth;
    3) I don’t want to depend on other people when that time comes

So … planning for one’s retirement is something that I think is very important. Once you start working ( or earning ), it should be one of your priorities.

For younger people like me, I think it’s still good to plan our retirement ahead so we would know how to manage our finances well. I would love to learn this however, I have to go somewhere on that date. Hoping they would have another one soon.

    • May De Jesus-Palacpac

It’s a webinar, Louise. Like I said in the blog, even if you’re not available on the date, you can still sign up because they will provide you with the video of the livestream and all the materials to catch you up. 🙂

    • May De Jesus-Palacpac

We plan to teach this to our children at a young age, actually. The earlier they learn responsibility in handling money, the better. 🙂

  • Elizabeth O.

Planning for one’s retirement is really important. I don’t want to burden my children when i get old and sickly and I also one to leave them something when I go.

  • Fred

I know we really have to save for our retirement so we can enjoy it. We do not want to be dependent on our children who will have their own families to worry about. I want to travel more with my wife when that time comes.

  • Noah

I admire how easily you made the point why it’s a good thing for a husband and a wife to eventually find time to spend together after the hustle and bustles of life lovingly raising a family. It’s something i want for my mom now that she’s the only parent we have left. this was inspirational, will forward it to her, she’ll need it

    • May De Jesus-Palacpac

This is inspiring for your mom, maybe, but I think you should consider it. This is financial planning so you can have a stable future. 🙂

    • May De Jesus-Palacpac

Yes, I think if you’re planning on investments and disclosing private details on your finances, it is wisest to choose a financial planner you actually trust. This is more for beginners. It’s a webinar that would give you an idea on where to start.

    • May De Jesus-Palacpac

I agree, Jojo. The current government pension plans aren’t sufficient enough to give the older people a convenient living they deserve.

  • Summer

I like the picture… Sentimental lang. Of all the insurances, this is the most familiar kind to me. Nothing is too late for initiatives! ^_^

    • May De Jesus-Palacpac

Good for you, Papaleng! 🙂 We’re a bit late on this but we hope to catch up. Retirement isn’t that far off for us,either.

  • lovemindanao

what an innovative way to reach out for the client… the webinar… i wonder what would i be like if i am about to retire… i am a little not concern right now about it .. im still young that’s why maybe.

    • May De Jesus-Palacpac

We’re only 40, my husband and I, and we realized that our biggest mistake is not thinking about retirement when we were in our 20’s. Like I said in the blog…

“And if you’re a young professional, I’m telling you, young people, plan now while you’re young.

Because if you find yourself in the same boat as us — planning our retirement alongside raising a young family, it’s still possible but it’s a whole lot harder.”

I don’t really get much from these, if you’re thinking this is plain business. In fact, the last paycheck I got from Manila Workshop was Php 50. This is really because I strongly believe Filipinos should be educated in this area. This is more for you, than it is for me, actually, if you’re considering your future.

  • R U S S

I hope more Filipinos, even those who are still young, would see the value of saving up early. But of course, it’s never too late to start planning for one’s retirement.

    • May De Jesus-Palacpac

YES! Most of these retirement planning workshops and resources are for the younger generation, not for the middle-aged and older. But I’m glad we can still catch up.

  • Nicol

Retirement is something that is in the back of my mind as I’m still very young. I need to plan my and enjoy my life first

  • Ling Tan

What an interesting idea! A financial talk via webinair. How the internet is changing the world and bringing knowledge literally to our doorsteps.

Did you just update your site’ design, May? I like the clean look!

    • May De Jesus-Palacpac

Haha, no, the design and layout has been around since before the hosting which started last February. Perhaps it’s the first time you took notice? 😉

Yes, isn’t it what the web is for? Information is for everyone! 🙂

  • Ma Rozelle Vendil

I am an advocate of financial literacy too, that’s why I feel grateful everytime I encounter people like you who’s eager to achieve financial freedom. I think everyone wants to have a sense of financial security, it’s just that some people don’t have any idea how to start. So thank you for sharing this post. I believe this information that you shared is helpful enough already to guide people seeking financial freedom.

Somebody said: “The best time to plant a tree was 10 years ago. The is next best time is now. ” I think this applies to retirement planning or financial planning. What you do today will greatly affect your future. But, we also need to balance planning for the future and enjoying today. Sometimes, I can obsess over it and miss what is beautiful today because my mind is on the future.

  • Raymond Vasquez

I’ve just taken action for my future. I’ve just received a confirmation regarding a policy I took for my security and future. Hopefully, I’d be able to fund for each of my children’s education and future. 😀 Although, I am still single, I am already setting apart something for my future children. When the time comes that the need arises, I’d have something to spend. 😀 This is a great reminder to be conscious about financial planning.

  • Ayi

My husband and I are in our 20s and we already alloted a fund for retirement. Yes, it’s early but you’ll never know what will happen diba?

    • May De Jesus-Palacpac

That’s where wisdom come in, I suppose. Some people are too extreme. On my part I want to enjoy my children, too, while they are young and still with us, so it’s really a matter of balancing priorities.:)

  • Sunshine Kelly

Yup, I agree. We have to plan our retirement when you are young because we might not know what will happened. Thanks for the information, i will check out Fitz Villafuerte,Ready to be Rich Guide to Investing book.

  • Sumi Go | The Purple Doll

Wow, this is very timely! I was just getting myself into learning more about personal finance. And just this week, I’ve been thinking of starting to save early for a retirement fund. Some people my age would think I’m crazy, but saving 5% to 10% for retirement isn’t that hard especially if one starts early. I read an article detailing how it would be wiser for 20-something yuppies to invest early on, and your post backs it up even more.

Anyhow, would definitely look into “attending” this webinar. 🙂 Thanks for the heads up!

  • Raquel

Its good to plan a retirement while we are young. When the maturity comes we can get enough money to sustain us while we are no longer have income coming in.

    • May De Jesus-Palacpac

Well, if we pay our taxes, we do have retirement pensions and other senior citizens’ benefits. But if we want to have, not just a convenient life, but a financially stable life that we can really enjoy our remaining years and catch up to the things we had to set aside for family, it’s good to have planned and prepared. The earlier, the better talaga.

  • Que Sullano - Gavan

Planning for a retirement is really a need as we do not want to see ourselves working until we grow old. As for us, we plan to keep and add more passive income generating projects. We want to travel and spend time with the family instead of working all the time 🙂

  • Ruth

Interesting post! Retirement is one of the important topics my husband and I always forget to discuss about. Thank you reminding me through your post Mommy Mae! Hopefully, I could join the webinar too!

    • May De Jesus-Palacpac

Even if you are not available on June 6, you will still receive all the materials and a video of the livestream and a copy of the Q & A. 🙂

  • Rhoda Fajardo

One thing that I need to overcome right now is doubt and fear. Financial education is very important, but the best of it don’t cone free. 1500 may look like a big number but I’m actually considering it since there’s a promise of valuable information from a very reputable person. I will think hard before I decide. Or I’ll take the easy route of borrowing my mom’s credit card. Haha! 🙂

  • MrsMartinez

I should start planning na nga pala for my retirement noh? I think it’s never too late pa naman. I will look into the schedule. I hope I can learn a lot.

it is also one my my life goals to retire comfortably and to not be a burden to my son or his siblings {in case I will have more children in the future}. i agree that it is every responsible parent’s aim to plan a good retirement for themselves and their partners, and hopefully, leave something for the children, too, that will help set them up for most of their adult life.

  • Paulline @ milastolemyheart

I used to think retirement is just for old people and that my only option was to wait for my SSS or GSIS remitance. I’m just happy my company provides free talk and seminars on money matters and realized that I can work on my early retirement. For those who wants to be comfortable in their retirement, start planning early. Webinars like this will be very beneficial
